KILIMANJARO GUIDE - MACHAME ROUTE TREKKING DAYS!
       
DAY 1 Description . Depart from Machame Gate - After having signed in with Kilimanjaro National Park - Trek up 4x4 Trail - Leave Track on to smaller footpath - well maintained but slightly muddy underfoot. - Long Continuous ascent - but not too severe - Approx height gain = + 1200m (1800m > 3000m) - Approx Duration of Trek = 4-6 hrs - Vegetation > Cloud Forest thinning to Moorland - Campsite - at Machame Camp - Sheltered, warm. - Daytime - 20 degrees - Night - +7 degrees    

DAY 2 Description

Depart from Machame Camp - Continuous Ascent - Steep in Places - Footpath - across some open exposed areas - Long Continuous ascent - very steep in places - Approx height gain = + 850m (3000m > 3850m) - Approx Duration of Trek = 4-6 hrs - Vegetation >Alpine Moorland - low scrub - Campsite - at New Shira Camp - Exposed, cold, windy, but with great views of the Shira Massif, and Kibo. - Many trekkers experience AMS symptoms at Shira - Daytime Temp - 15 degrees - Night Temp. - + 2 degrees    
DAY 3 Description . Acclimatisation Trek Day - on Shira Plateau . Descent from Shira Camp . Climb up to Shira Cathedral (3900m) . Easy Day . High Alpine Moorland Terrain . Easy Walking . Enjoyable Exploration of the Plateau . Approx Duration - 3-4 hrs . Daytime Temp. Approx 12 degrees . Night-time Temp. Approx -1 degrees    

DAY 4 Description

Route Shira Huts to Barranco Camp
Path Condition Good, Rocky, Undulating
Terrain Path crosses Lava Tower (4600m)
Vegetation Hi Mountain Wilderness, little plant life
Trek Distance Approx 15 km
Trek Duration 6-7 hours
Max Altitude 4600m
Height Gain (Net) (m) +100m
Daytime Temp. ( °C) +5 (At Lava Tower)

Interesting Features Shark's Tooth, Lava Tower Massif, Arrow Glacier, Expansive views of Kibo

DAY 5 Description
Route Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley
Path Condition Initially involves easy scrambling, then good path, Rocky, Undulating
Terrain Path crosses Barranco Wall, interesting scramble to (4350m)
Vegetation Hi Mountain Wilderness, little plant life
Trek Distance Approx 9 km
Trek Duration 4-5 hours (Trekking Slowly)
Max Altitude 4350m
Height Gain (Net) (m) No net change (but still beneficial for acclimatisation purposes)

DAY 6 Description
Route Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp
Path Condition Slow Gradual Ascent , with one dip then re-ascent just before Barafu.
Terrain Easy Path throughout, final ascent fairly tough and steep
Vegetation Hi Mountain Wilderness, very little plant life

Trek Duration 3-4 hours (Trekking Slowly)
Max Altitude 4600m at Barafu

Interesting Features Long Ascent beside open face of Kibo. Good views of glaciers. Spectacular Campsite at Barafu, nestled beneath the final push to the summit.
Campsite at End of Day Overlooking open valley, great views at night back to Moshi, good views up to Rebman Glacier
   
DAY 7 Description
Route SUMMIT DAY! - Then descend back to Barafu, and down to Mweka Camp
Path Condition Long Hard, Cold ascent up to summit Cone. Loose rocks underfoot and scree
Terrain Very Steep Switchback Trail, long tough ascent. Easier terrain after Stella Point
Vegetation Nil - although you may be lucky and see Lammergeyer (Alpine Bird of Prey)
Trek Distance Approx 12 km
Trek Duration 15 hours (Trekking Slowly) - ascent(7hrs), descent to Camp(3hrs) and onwards to Mweka
Max Altitude 5895m at Uhuru Peak
Height Gain (Net) (m) +1295m - to summit - then descend to 3100m at Mweka.
Daytime Temp. ( °C) + 7 - at Barafu Campsite
Night Time Temp. ( ° C) - 15 during ascent to Stella Point (before sunrise) + windchill
Interesting Features Stunning sunrise over Mawenzi Peak, beautiful otherworldly Glaciers on summit. Amazing Volcanic Cone, with strange ashen landscape. The Famous Pose on the Summit!!!!!

DAY 8 Description
Route Easiest Day of All, gentle descent, along big path, through forest
Path Condition Good wide path, opening to 4 x 4 trail at final hour.
Terrain Steep to begin, but overall, easy gradient, good path through forest
Vegetation Scrubby trees at Mweka, growing to huge cloud forest lower down, with monkeys and many birds in forest.
Trek Distance Approx 8 km
Trek Duration 3-4 hours, trekking is fast and easy - a shower and a beer beckon!
Max Altitude 3100m at Mweka Camp
Height Gain (Net) (m) -1300m to Gate
