. Depart from Machame Gate
- After having signed in with Kilimanjaro National Park
- Trek up 4x4 Trail
- Leave Track on to smaller footpath - well maintained but slightly muddy underfoot.
- Long Continuous ascent - but not too severe
- Approx height gain = + 1200m (1800m > 3000m)
- Approx Duration of Trek = 4-6 hrs
- Vegetation > Cloud Forest thinning to Moorland
- Campsite - at Machame Camp - Sheltered, warm.
- Daytime - 20 degrees
- Night - +7 degrees

DAY 2 Description |
Depart from Machame Camp
- Continuous Ascent
- Steep in Places
- Footpath - across some open exposed areas
- Long Continuous ascent - very steep in places
- Approx height gain = + 850m (3000m > 3850m)
- Approx Duration of Trek = 4-6 hrs
- Vegetation >Alpine Moorland - low scrub
- Campsite - at New Shira Camp - Exposed, cold, windy, but with great views of the Shira Massif, and Kibo.
- Many trekkers experience AMS symptoms at Shira
- Daytime Temp - 15 degrees
- Night Temp. - + 2 degrees
