Tuscany Cycling Challenge
Join us on a truly wonderful journey through the very best of rural and untouched Italy. Experience historic cities, stunning river valleys, winding roads through the scenic Garfagnanan Hills, and coastal riding down via Viareggio - get ready for an all in awesome adventure! Oh and of course - don't forget the wonderful Italian food, wine and hospitality!
Our ride will take us from the tourist hot spot of Pisa and its amazing leaning tower. Here we shall spend our first night making preparations for the journey ahead. We shall then depart through the Pisan Mountains before dropping down through into our first historic stop off - the stunning city (and hometown to Puccini) of Lucca! Just time for a spin through the city, to check out the city walls, and take a quick coffee stop, before heading off once again! Then we're on up the picturesque Serchio Valley - where we shall ride past the medieval Ponte del Diavolo. Next it’s a challenging climb up to our overnight stop nestled amongst the Apuan mountains - an unforgettable ride amongst sublime scenery. Our next few days will see us back once again to the Serchio Valley - before continuing North via the historic town of Castelnuovo. From here we make dramatic left turn, and make the steady (our slow and deliberate main challenge for the event) climb up over the Apuan Mountains, reaching a height of approximately 900m before enjoying a memorable descent down towards the Mediterranean at Massa. Our final day's ride will return us via Viareggio and Lucca back through San Giuliano Terme and on to central Pisa once again for a final evening's celebration! On our final day we will transfer to Pisa airport for a return flight home.
Day 1 - Travel from UK - meet early evening in Pisa - you will be collected from the airport, and transferred to your hotel. Assemble / collect bikes, and attend challenge event briefing. Evening dinner + early night!
Day 2 - Pisa > Fornovolasco (80km) - Breakfast 07:15 - depart by 08:30 - expected lunch at Ponte del Diavolo - and ride to Fornovolasco arriving mid to late afternoon - total distance - approx 80km (around 5-6 hours).
Day 3 - Fornovolasco > Massa (75km) - Breakfast 07:30 - depart by 09:00 - descend stunning mountain road back to Gallicano - then ride to first stop in Castelnuovo. Coffee, then begin climb into mountains (climb is approximately for 16km - at a steady gradient) - taking this steadily - this should take us a maximum of 2 hours with a few breaks. Lunch in Arni. Then in the afternoon descend mountains to Massa - riding down to the seaside for a late afternoon dip in the sea. Before returning to our hotel for the evening. Total Distance - approx 65km - around 7-8 hours
Day 4 - Massa > Pisa (78km) - Breakfast 07:30 - depart by 09:00 - then descend coastal road = pleasant flat riding - for first 30km. Then after Viareggio - turn inland via smaller country roads for undulating ride to Lucca - arrval in Lucca for late lunch. Final ride after lunch - via San Giuliano Terme and back into Pisa for final evening celebrations!
Day 5 - Easy breakfast. Short transfer to Pisa Airport for return to UK.
We shall use simple hotels, with shower and toilet facilities each evening (sometimes shared, sometimes en-suite) - but always clean, comfortable and full of character. The itinerary is organised on a full board basis.
What is a Level 3.0 Cycling Challenge Like?
These rides are typically multi day rides, with medium distances and undulating terrain. Level 3 rides suit riders who ride regularly, and are looking for something challenging but manageable. In the case of single day events, you can expect up to 8 hours of cycling with breaks. In the case of a multi day ride, you can expect a slightly lower daily duration - but of course - the effort is sustained over a longer period. You should be a competent rider, with regular training outings - both at the weekend and ideally with another session during the week. A 10 week training programme is available for our 3 star rides.
How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 3.0 ‘Bike Ride’?
You need to have good endurance for these events. You must be used to doing long bike rides in the countryside of 5 hours + and distances of between 45 - 55 miles . You should be doing regular exercise - with some serious cycle training (at least twice per week in the run up to the event). Your typical comfortable cycling speed will be around 21-23 km/hr on flat and gently undulating terrain, and you should be able to cycle at higher speed for up to 1 hour or 25 km (on a road bike). You may also blend in other types of exercise - but for longer periods of time (ie sessions in excess of 1.5 hrs.) - however cycling is the best preparation (obviously!)
Please note, it is extremely important for this physical challenge that you are in good health. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please consider carefully whether you should be joining the challenge. Please ensure you fill in the booking form accurately and honestly, this is important. In the case of serious conditions (epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, recent illness or operations), please discuss the challenge with your GP. Please also ensure you notify us of any allergies or similar.
It requires stamina and good aerobic fitness - but good willpower will also come in handy! Failure to disclose medical conditions is a serious omission - that could have serious repercussions on any of our challenges.

This itinerary is normally run in either late spring or early summer, or late summer early autumn. At these times the temperatures will be warm without being too swealtering! But, as ever, we should be prepared for the full range of weathers - both hot and sunny and (less likely) cool and showery - be prepared!
