Avon Mega Abseil Challenge Picture 1
Best Time of Year: Year Round
Avon Mega Abseil Challenge
Get ready for one of the biggest steps of your life, and a big adrenaline rush! Stepping back out over the towering descent of the Avon Gorge - some 190 feet. This will be a challenge to remember, and to be proud of! We shall equip you properly, and make sure you are briefed and trained in how to safely make the descent to the bottom of the gorge.
Meeting mid morning in Avon Gorge, we shall conduct a thorough briefing, get you equipped and suited in your safety harness and helmet. We shall then conduct our initial 'training' abseil' at a slightly lower level - to give you the opportunity to get the hang of things. Then there will be time for a tea break, before we set off to the very top of the gorge, for the 'big one'! It's certainly a long way down from here - and the abseil will take you quite a while to complete - with time to soak in your vertical surroundings. Make sure someone has got the camera ready for this one. Down on the ground you're going to have quite a smile on your face, as the happy adrenaline feel takes over!
Once you have been met by your instructor, you will be briefed on the abseil. All equipment will be fitted and checked. We will then head onto the short abseil to give you a taste of what to expect, and talk you through the procedure.
If the group size increases we may split the day in two parts. An AM or PM slot may be offered to you in communications prior to the day.
Once you have completed the shorter abseil, we will have a brief rest, before walking up to the top of the Gorge, at 190ft. Then its time for the Avon Mega Abseil.
Once all have completed the Mega Abseil, de-kit and debrief. Finish.
Accommodation is readily available within a short Distance of the Gorge itself. Also close at hand will be restaurants and cafés for topping up those all important calories.
What is a Level 1.5 Climbing Challenge Like?
These activities tend to be higher adrenaline challenges - but with lower specific fitness. Examples might be introductory abseils or simple caving outings, or an easy canoeing itinerary. Equally a very easy going introductory multi activity itinerary could be found here. These activities would be suitable for challengers with basic fitness levels, or returning to challenges after some time away.
How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 1.5 ‘Climbing Challenge’?
You need to active, mobile, and in good health. You should be used to going out for walks of 2-4 hours on level or gently undulating terrain. Walking should be a regular activity for you - although you only need an introductory level of fitness. You should be doing some physical activity at least once per week.
Please note, it is extremely important for this physical challenge that you are in good health. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please consider carefully whether you should be joining the challenge. Please ensure you fill in the booking form accurately and honestly, this is important. In the case of serious conditions (epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, recent illness or operations), please discuss the challenge with your GP. Please also ensure you notify us of any allergies or similar.
Failure to disclose medical conditions is a serious omission - that could have serious repercussions on any of our challenges.

Due to recent unforeseen rockfall at Avon Gorge, it has been neccessary to change the location of this abseil. We hope that it will be possible to resume abseiling at Avon Gorge very soon - but until this time we have altered the location of the abseil to the equally stunning Uphill Quarry - beautifully located just south of Weston Super Mare. It has expansive views to South Wales, and Weston Grand Pier - and a fascinating church on top of this unsual rocky outcrop. Please call if you'd like to discuss any aspect of this event.
