3 Peaks Test Day Surrey Hills

Trek Adventure

Join Adventure Cafe for the training event for the big 3 peaks! The 3 peaks challenge is one of the most popular challenges in the UK and takes in Britain's highest peaks in 24hrs. Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales. This is a pleasant one day event to start your preparations for the challenge ahead.

You have very sensibly opted to gauge your fitness levels in advance of your 3 Peaks Challenge Event. This single day of training and fitness assessment is designed, in a convenient location, to put you through your paces, and to see how you measure up to the challenge of the 3 Peaks. We shall be meeting in Ashbury, and tackling some sharp undulations on the Ridgeway, that will get your heart beating, and your pulse racing. But most importantly, will allow you to benchmark against a reasonable pace, and some measured climbs. Rather than going into the 3 Peaks ‘blind’, this day will give you some idea of what lies ahead, the level of physical intensity, and fitness required.

Itinerary

Meet at 09:00 - Ashbury, Rose and Crown Pub Car Park
Walk approximately 30km (including ascent of approximately 550m (almost half the ascent of Ben Nevis).
Within the walk, at least two timed, measured sections, on specific ascents of 100m or more. This will give us a good indication on your fitness levels, and will form the majority of our fitness assessment, in conjunction with your overall speed for the walk. The walk is expected to last approximately 6 - 6.5 hours. This is walking at a fast pace, and not stopping for many breaks. Your leader will encourage you to walk at an appropriate speed which will give you an indication of what you need to maintain on the 3 Peaks.
We expect to complete our walk at Ashbury by 17:00, ready for your return journey home.
At the end of the day there will be opportunity for a cup of tea (maybe even a slice of cake!) and a chat about the 3 Peaks event…

Route Map

What is a Level 2.5 Trekking Challenge Like?

For this type of challenge - you can expect either distance (up to 12 or 15 miles), or altitude gain - around 1000m. But not both! If you climb, then the distance will be less, if you cover the distance, then the altitude gain will be little. Typically conditions underfoot will be good - although there are exceptions to this. If you encounter rough conditions underfoot, then the distance / altitude will be reduced. These events would suit someone of good all round fitness, who takes exercise regularly - without neccessarily being of high fitness.

How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 2.5 ‘Trek’ ?

You must be active and with moderate fitness level. You should be taking regular exercise, consisting of regular walks and possibly other sports (swimming / football etc.) You should be comfortable in undertaking long country walks of up to 7+ hours or 15+ miles in the lowland English countryside.

Medical Issues

Please note, it is extremely important for this physical challenge that you are in good health. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please consider carefully whether you should be joining the challenge. Please ensure you fill in the booking form accurately and honestly, this is important. In the case of serious conditions (epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, recent illness or operations), please discuss the challenge with your GP. Please also ensure you notify us of any allergies or similar.

You should be used to walking reasonable distances each day to contemplate this trek. It requires stamina and good aerobic fitness - but good willpower will also come in handy! Failure to disclose medical conditions is a serious omission - that could have serious repercussions on any of our challenges.
