50 Miles In The Skye

Trek Adventure

One of our most exhilarating treks following a remote ridgeline. Set in the north of Scotland on the mystical, world-famous Isle of Skye, the 50 Miles In The Skye trek is like no other mountain journey.

Day One

Fly to Inverness then take a train or transfer to Portree on the Isle of Skye. Alternatively, take the night train from London St Pancras into Scotland and another train to the ferry port of Mallaig. Meet your fellow group members and the qualified Mountain Leaders for an event briefing over dinner at the hostel.

Day Two

Take a short transfer north to the start of the trek; you may recognise the famous Quiraing rock tower that acts as our start line. We’ll walk 24km south along the ridgeline; steep on one side, more gradual the other, to reach the Storr, another famous out-of-this-world rock formation and an awaiting taxi back to our hostel accommodation whilst admiring the incredible views that has made the Isle of Skye the most sought-after island to visit in the UK. We’ll have a hearty meal waiting for us at the hostel, followed by a wee dram of the local whisky.

Day Three

We’ll jump in a taxi to take us to where we finished the previous day to begin a long 35km trek on more gradual terrain, this time next to the coast. We’ll have views looking over the Inner Sound to the Isle of Raasay and impressive mountain views inland. We’ll arrive in Sligachan for bunkhouse accommodation.

Day Four

Our final day’s walk is the most remote; venturing into a wide glen and past deep lochs. We’ll summit Bla Bheinn and drop down the other side to meet our transfer to take us back onto the mainland. We’ll reminisce about the incredible journey, the views, and the incredible team that have supported each other to reach the end.

What is a Level 4.5 Trekking Challenge Like?

You are now moving into the realms of serious challenges - where you are likely to encounter carrying loads, rough terrain, sleep deprivation, or high altitude. In any case - be prepared for an event which is going to take you to the limits of your comfort zone. Trekking days will be up to 13 hours, or slightly less if the event stretches over several days. The severity of the challenge may be magnified by various factors - as you will need to be more resilient - due to simple living conditions - i.e. using same clothes for several days, lack of washing facilities, simple food, variable weather conditions and maybe camping - this forms a part of the challenge. You need to be in good shape to undertake any of these events, so you need to be training regularly. The height gain each day is greater than for level 3 - so expect plenty of hills!

How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 4.5 ‘Trek’?

To participate in these events you need to be in good fitness. You enjoy taking exercise, and do it regularly (a couple of times a week minimum). You partake in several different types of activity, possibly including the gym, swimming, running, circuit training. You probably are capable of running up to 5 or 6 miles, but in a good steady speed (around 9-10 minute miles). If you do not run - you should be regularly undertaking challenging walks or other strenuous exercise. You should be comfortable walking 18-20 miles in the English lowland countryside.
