Glencoe & Ben Nevis

Trek Adventure

This year take on the best of Scotland's Western Peaks with SJP and Adventure Cafe. Summit Ben Nevis, the fabulous highest peak in Scotland along with the most beautiful mountain massif in the West of Scotland, the legendary 3 sisters of Glencoe. Witness the dramatic landscapes, mountain ridges and lochs in this stunning region of the UK. Sit back with a whisky in the evenings at the leisure club we will be staying at for the 3 nights after 2 tough days with a huge 2500m of ascent to conquer across 30km.

We shall begin your trekking adventure by meeting at Glasgow Central then Glasgow International airport to then transfer over to Fort William. Alternatively you can drive directly to the hotel carpark if preferred. Our base is Fort William - nestled at the foot of mighty Ben Nevis.

On the first day we will transfer to Glencoe to take on a steep direct ascent of the 3 sisters range to reach the sumit of Bidean nam Bian looking across to Stob Coire nan Lochan. We shall ascend via the valley inbetween Beinn Fhada and Gearr Aonach and descend to the West of Aonach Dubh towards Loch Achtriochtan.

The second day of trekking will begin with a short transfer to the foot of Scotland's highest peak, the one and only Ben Nevis at 1344m. Starting from just 20m above sea you will tackle 'The Ben' via the classic 'Pony Track', which climbs from Glen Nevis, via Lochan Meall and the crashing Red Burn before the final punishing zigzags' to the top.

You will be accompanied by experienced & qualified mountain leaders to ensure that you are safe at all times. Your leader will have a breadth of outdoors experience and will be a qualified first aider.

We will spend the first two evenings eating at the hotel restaurant with a celebration meall on th last night a short shuttle away. Lunches are provided for taking on the hill but please bring your own preferred top up snacks as well.

On the last morning we will transfer you back to Glagow airport/station departing Fort William at 08.30

What is a Level 3.5 Trekking Challenge Like?

These challenges are either longer, higher, or span several days. In the case of single day events, you can expect up to 12 hours trekking. In the case of a multi day trek, you can expect lower daily durations - but of course - the effort is sustained over a longer period. You need to be keen on physical exercise for these events, and to enjoy taking exercise, and to do it regularly. Longer duration long haul treks are likely to be easier in terms of the physical walking, however, you will need to be more resilient - due to simple living conditions - ie using same clothes for several days, lack of washing facilities, simple food, and maybe camping - this forms an integral part of the challenge.

How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 3.5 ‘Trek’?

You need to have good endurance for these events. You must be used to doing very long walks in the countryside - 7 hours + . You should be doing regular exercise - possibly with some running. Your running speed will be around 10-11 minute miling, and you should be able to run a minimum of 4 to five miles. If you do not run, you should be concentrating on other types of exercise - but for longer periods of time (i.e. sessions in excess of 1.5 hrs.) - these other forms of exercise should be at a moderate to high level.

Medical Issues

Please note, it is extremely important for this physical challenge that you are in good health. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please consider carefully whether you should be joining the challenge. Please ensure you fill in the booking form accurately and honestly, this is important. In the case of serious conditions (epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, recent illness or operations), please discuss the challenge with your GP. Please also ensure you notify us of any allergies or similar.

You should be used to walking reasonable distances each day to contemplate this trek. It requires stamina and good aerobic fitness - but good willpower will also come in handy! Failure to disclose medical conditions is a serious omission - that could have serious repercussions on any of our challenges.

Special Notes

In usual Adventure Cafe style we will depart on each day as one convoy and break down into sub groups based on walking speed. There will be the opportunity to grab a drink upon completing the 3 sisters while waiting for all walkers to return for a shared transfer. There will be a few transfers available back to the hotel upon completing Ben Nevis.
