Isle of Man Cross the Island Challenge Weekend

Trek Adventure

A unique opportunity to traverse on the UK’s islands over a weekend. Easily accessible by ferry, you’ll start on the most northerly point on the island, Point of Ayre, where on a clear day you can see England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. You’ll walk south down the coast to Ramsey then walk inland along the Millennium Way. You’ll summit rolling hills then head onto the West coast which you’ll follow to the most southerly point of the Isle of Man. An incredible weekend with a variety of walking: beach, hill and cliffside.

Day One

Meet in Liverpool’s Bootle Dock to take the 3 hour ferry to Douglas on the Isle of Man. You’ll check into your accommodation in Douglas, then head into town for a dinner, briefing, and to build excitement for the challenge ahead.

Day Two

After a filling breakfast, you’ll transfer up to the Point of Ayre Lighthouse, the most northerly point on the Isle of Man. You’ll walk along the flat coastline to warm up the legs for 10km to Ramsay. After a coffee stop, you’ll walk inland to meet the Millennium Way, a long-distance route that takes in the highlights of the island. The terrain will change to gravel track, following rolling moorland hills. It’ll feel remote with fantastic views of the route ahead to the finish point tomorrow. After a 35km day, you’ll finish in Crosby with the transfer waiting to take you back to your accommodation in Douglas and a hearty meal.

Day Three

After an early start, you’ll be transferred to yesterday’s finish in Crosby. A leisurely start along the river will wake you up before reaching St Johns where the undulating day begins. The route winds over a couple of hills then reaches the west coast, which will be followed along the clifftops to the southern point of the island, Calf Sound. The transfer will take you back to Douglas for a celebratory meal and drinks.

Day Four

The following morning you’ll take the ferry back to Liverpool and make your journeys home.

What is a Level 3.5 Trekking Challenge Like?

These challenges are either longer, higher, or span several days. In the case of single day events, you can expect up to 12 hours trekking. In the case of a multi day trek, you can expect lower daily durations - but of course - the effort is sustained over a longer period. You need to be keen on physical exercise for these events, and to enjoy taking exercise, and to do it regularly. Longer duration long haul treks are likely to be easier in terms of the physical walking, however, you will need to be more resilient - due to simple living conditions - ie using same clothes for several days, lack of washing facilities, simple food, and maybe camping - this forms an integral part of the challenge.

How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 3.5 ‘Trek’?

You need to have good endurance for these events. You must be used to doing very long walks in the countryside - 7 hours + . You should be doing regular exercise - possibly with some running. Your running speed will be around 10-11 minute miling, and you should be able to run a minimum of 4 to five miles. If you do not run, you should be concentrating on other types of exercise - but for longer periods of time (i.e. sessions in excess of 1.5 hrs.) - these other forms of exercise should be at a moderate to high level.
